The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction held at the Abady Al-Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday created history. Shreyas Iyer, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain, became the most expensive player ever in the IPL. Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured his services for a whopping ₹26.75 crore, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s ₹24.75 crore record set by KKR in the previous auction.

Shreyas Iyer’s Remarkable Journey

Shreyas Iyer had a stellar season with KKR last year, leading them to their third IPL title. However, the franchise made a surprising decision to release him ahead of the auction. The 29-year-old batter has been in excellent form in domestic cricket this season, with two centuries in the Ranji Trophy and a ton in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

In the IPL 2024 season, Shreyas showcased his batting prowess, scoring 351 runs in 14 matches at an impressive strike rate of 146.86. His consistent performances and leadership skills have made him one of the most sought-after players in the league.

A Record-Breaking Achievement

With this signing, Shreyas also achieved another unique feat. He is now the first Indian captain to lead two different teams to IPL finals. He had previously guided Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 before repeating the achievement with KKR last season.

Punjab Kings will now hope that Shreyas’ leadership and form can help them secure their first-ever IPL title. His addition strengthens their batting lineup, and fans are eagerly waiting to see him in action in the upcoming season.
