Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has accused N. Srinivasan, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owner and ex-BCCI president, of rigging IPL auctions and influencing matches. In a recent interview, Modi revealed that Srinivasan pressured him to manipulate the 2009 IPL auction to ensure Andrew Flintoff joined CSK.
Lalit Modi on Auction Fixing
According to Modi, N. Srinivasan asked him to exclude Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera from CSK’s plans so the team could pick England’s Andrew Flintoff. Following this, CSK secured Flintoff for ₹7.5 crore, a record fee at the time.
However, the English all-rounder’s performance was disappointing. He managed just 62 runs in three matches with a below-average strike rate and took only two wickets, conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.55.
Lalit Modi admitted that he asked other teams not to bid for Flintoff as per Srinivasan’s request.
“I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan; every team knew about it,” Modi said, claiming CSK was determined to sign the player.
Allegations of Indirect Fixing
Modi also accused Srinivasan of influencing umpires to favor CSK in matches. He called this “indirect fixing” and claimed Srinivasan often assigned Chennai-based umpires for CSK games. Modi said that when he began exposing such practices, Srinivasan turned against him.
“He doubted IPL’s success initially but became a big problem later,” said Modi. “He would manipulate umpire appointments, which I couldn’t ignore. Putting a Chennai umpire for a Chennai game is not right.”
