Beau Webster has been called up to the Australian squad for the second Test against India, which will be played in Adelaide starting December 6. The all-rounder from Tasmania replaces Mitchell Marsh, who sustained an injury during the first Test at Perth, where Australia suffered a 295-run defeat.
Webster, a right-handed pace all-rounder like Marsh, has been included as cover due to the latter’s fitness issues. Although the Australian team management had initially planned to retain the same lineup, Marsh’s injury has prompted them to reconsider their options.
The 30-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the Sheffield Shield over the last two seasons. Webster has scored 1788 runs, including five centuries and nine half-centuries, making him a reliable batter in the domestic circuit.
He also delivered a strong performance in the recent Australia A series against India. Webster finished as the second-highest run-scorer for Australia A, accumulating 145 runs in four innings at an average of 72.50. With the ball, he showcased his bowling skills by taking seven wickets, becoming the joint-leading wicket-taker alongside Brendan Doggett.
Speaking about his recent form, Webster said:
“To get a few runs and wickets (for Australia A) was pleasing against a strong Indian side. Playing ‘A’ cricket, which is a step below Test level, prepares you well. Getting the call from ‘Bails’ (men’s selection chair George Bailey) was a proud moment, and I’m excited to join the team.”
Webster will join the squad in Adelaide next week. He added:
“There’s a quick turnaround between the Adelaide and Gabba Tests, so I’m here to provide cover for the middle-order role, depending on the team’s decision.”
