Sri Lanka suffered a historic collapse on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban. The visitors were dismissed for just 42 runs, their lowest-ever score in Test cricket. Marco Jansen led South Africa’s charge, delivering a stunning bowling performance with figures of 7/13 in 6.5 overs.
The Sri Lankan innings lasted just 13.5 overs, or 83 deliveries, making it the shortest innings (in terms of balls faced) in nearly 100 years. The previous record dates back to 1924 when England bowled out South Africa in 75 balls.
Sri Lanka’s Collapse and Jansen’s Dominance
Jansen’s fiery spell dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order, with support from Gerald Coetzee (2/18) and Kagiso Rabada (1/10). Only Kamindu Mendis (13) and Lahiru Kumara (10*) managed to reach double digits, while five batters were dismissed for ducks.
Sri Lanka’s score of 42 surpassed their previous lowest Test total of 71, scored against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994. It is also the sixth-lowest score in Test cricket history.
Jansen was unstoppable, taking key wickets, including Pathum Nissanka, Angelo Mathews, and Dhananjaya de Silva. He bowled Dinesh Chandimal for a duck with a sharp in-swinger, sending the off-stump flying. Jansen’s brilliance secured his best-ever Test figures and his second five-wicket haul.
