The International Cricket Council (ICC) had planned a crucial meeting to discuss the future of the 2025 Champions Trophy, but it has been postponed. Originally set for Friday, the meeting will now take place on November 30. The delay comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) failed to agree on the tournament’s host venue.
The BCCI has made it clear that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan, which is the official host for the 2025 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, the PCB has rejected the idea of using a hybrid model for the tournament. The hybrid model would allow some matches to be played in neutral venues instead of Pakistan. As a result, both boards are still at an impasse.
ICC’s Next Steps and Potential Solutions
A new emergency meeting is planned for Saturday, as both sides struggle to find common ground. According to a report from news agency PTI, the meeting was brief, with the PCB sticking to its position of hosting the event in Pakistan without any compromise on the location of the matches. Mohsin Naqvi, PCB’s chief, attended the meeting in person, while BCCI secretary Jay Shah joined online. Shah is set to take over as the ICC chairman on December 1.
One possible solution, as reported by the Indian Express, could involve moving some of India’s group stage matches, as well as one semi-final and the final, to a neutral venue like the UAE. This would allow the tournament to proceed despite the current disagreement. Another option would be to hold all knockout games in Pakistan, provided India does not qualify.
If a decision cannot be made soon, ICC members may have to vote on the matter. The majority vote will decide the path forward. The tournament is currently scheduled for February 19 to March 9, 2025.
The ongoing situation is similar to last year’s Asia Cup, where a hybrid model was used after India refused to play in Pakistan, with all their matches taking place in Colombo.
