The controversy surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is finality nearing a resolution. An important meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening (5th December) to address the tournament’s planning and scheduling issues.
Reports suggest that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to approve a hybrid hosting model for the event, with the new ICC Chairman, Jay Shah, overseeing the discussions.
The hybrid model has received support from most cricketing nations, including the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which initially opposed it. However, the PCB has reportedly put forth several demands in exchange for their acceptance of the model.
One of their major demands is to organize a tri-series involving India, Pakistan, and a third country at a neutral venue, likely the UAE. This proposal, however, is expected to be rejected by both ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
PCB’s Demands Face Rejection
The PCB made four demands to the ICC as part of their conditions for accepting the hybrid model. Among these, the most contentious was to host all ICC events in India under a hybrid model until 2031.
Another demand involved scheduling all Pakistan matches in the ICC Champions Trophy within their home country while separating them from India’s group.
However, this is unlikely to be accepted due to the massive global interest in India-Pakistan games. Broadcasters have also opposed the idea, as the rivalry between the two nations is a major draw.
As it stands, the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash is set for 1st March 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
