India captain Rohit Sharma has defended his use of Jasprit Bumrah during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, addressing questions about underutilising the star pacer. Rohit stressed that cricket is a team game and cannot rely solely on one player for success.
Bumrah bowled 30 overs as captain during the Perth Test, playing a key role in India’s massive 295-run victory. He bowled 18 overs in the first innings and 12 in the second, stepping up whenever a breakthrough was needed.
However, under Rohit’s captaincy at Adelaide, Bumrah bowled only 11 overs on Day 1 and just four on Day 2. While he took two early wickets, his limited spells during Australia’s counterattack raised concerns.
Teamwork Over Individual Effort
Responding to criticism, Rohit explained the need for collective responsibility in the team.
“You can’t expect Bumrah to do the job all the time. Others like Siraj also have to step in, just like Siraj did when he picked up four wickets,” Rohit said after India’s 10-wicket loss in Adelaide.
He added:
“In cricket, everyone has to share responsibility. Whether it’s batting or bowling, no single player can win matches all the time. It’s a team effort, and that’s what we believe in.”
Balancing Workload and Fitness
Rohit also highlighted the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload, especially in a long series.
“I talk to Bumrah regularly during his spells to check how he feels. It’s a five-Test series, and we need him fresh for all matches. Workload management is very important,” Rohit said.
He pointed out that overusing a bowler could lead to injuries and affect their performance.
“Bumrah can’t bowl from both ends all day. We plan his spells carefully, keeping his fitness in mind,” he explained.
On Day 2, Rohit gave Harshit Rana an extended spell, which helped India take the crucial wicket of Marnus Labuschagne. This decision, Rohit explained, was part of the strategy to share the workload among the bowlers.
