Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has called for India pacer Mohammed Siraj to be fined for his over-the-top appeal routine during matches. Clarke believes Siraj’s habit of celebrating LBW appeals without waiting for the umpire’s decision is against cricket’s traditions and should be penalized. The 2015 World Cup-winning skipper shared his thoughts during an interview on Sky Sports Radio.
Mohammed Siraj has been a standout bowler for India, especially in Test cricket. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he has taken nine wickets in two matches and proved to be a one of the most important players for the Indian team. However, his on-field behavior has drawn criticism from cricket experts.
Clarke expressed disappointment with Siraj’s approach, particularly his LBW appeals. Speaking on Sky Sports Radio, he said:
“Siraj should be fined for keeping on appealing for LBWs and not asking the umpire, He hits the batter on the pads and just runs down like they’re out. I’m surprised the ICC haven’t fined him because I remember when I was playing, you’d get fined every time.”
Former Australian cricketer Mark Taylor also weighed in on the issue during the Willow Talk podcast. Taylor suggested that senior players like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli should guide Siraj and address this behavior.
“I’d like to see someone have a little word with Mohammed Siraj. Someone like a Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli needs to go up to him because that is disrespecting the game and the umpire,” said Mark Taylor on Willow Talk podcast.
The Hyderabad pacer has been in the limelight since the ‘famous’ altercation with Travis Head in the recently concluded Adelaide Test, which Australia won comprehensively by 10 wickets to bring the five-match series to level 1-1.
