The much-awaited third Test between India and Australia started with disappointment, as rain interrupted most of the first day. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first, in order to take advantage of the seam-friendly conditions at The Gabba. But the Australian openers, Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney, defended well, frustrating India, and the visitors couldn’t take a wicket.
Things were looking good fir Australia as Indian pacers were not able to get enough help from the surface and were struggling with bowling, but soon, rain paused the match. The weather forecast for the rest of the Test match is not encouraging, and there’s a strong chance that the match could end without a result.
Impact on India’s WTC Final Hopes
This third Test is must-win for India, as they are close to being eliminated from the World Test Championship (WTC) race after four losses in their last five Tests. With only three matches left in the WTC cycle, including the ongoing Gabba Test, India must win this match to stay in the race for the WTC final.
If rain causes the match to end in a draw, both India and Australia will earn four points each. This will reduce India’s percentage points (PCT) to 55.88, but they will still remain in third place in the standings. On the other hand, Australia’s PCT will rise to 58.89, which is slightly ahead of India. South Africa, with a PCT of 63.33, will continue to lead the standings.
A drawn result in Brisbane would hurt India’s chances of making it to the WTC final, making it easier for Australia and South Africa to strengthen their positions. Australia also has more matches remaining, giving them a better chance to improve their points. In this scenario, India would have to rely on other results to stay in the race.
