Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie has opened up about the reasons behind his sudden resignation as Pakistan’s red-ball coach. Gillespie, who led Pakistan to a historic 2-1 Test series victory against England earlier this year, revealed a lack of communication with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and a diminishing role in decision-making as the main factors for his decision.
Gillespie shared his frustration over the unclear communication with the PCB regarding team selection and strategy. Speaking on ABC Grandstand, he expressed disappointment about not being informed about the playing XI ahead of match days.
“You want clear communication with selectors and other stakeholders, knowing the team at least a day before the game. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case,” he said.
He also cited the sudden dismissal of high-performance coach Tim Nielsen as the final straw.
“Tim was doing a fantastic job, and the feedback from the players was extremely positive. Yet, I wasn’t consulted or informed about his sacking. It made me question if my role as head coach was being valued,” Gillespie remarked.
Additionally, he felt his responsibilities were limited to basic tasks.
“I felt like I was just hitting catches on match mornings and had no say in crucial decisions,” he added.
Despite the challenges, Gillespie reflected on the progress made during his tenure. He highlighted the positive environment he created alongside Test captain Shan Masood, focusing on player development and fostering trust within the team.
“Shan and I built a strong relationship, and we were on the right path. Players felt free to express themselves and contribute, regardless of their experience,” he noted.
However, Gillespie’s efforts seemed overshadowed by administrative issues.
“I went into the role knowing the challenges, but the lack of clarity and communication made it impossible to continue,” he concluded.
With Gillespie stepping down, Aqib Javed has been named interim Test coach, adding to his white-ball coaching duties.
