Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has spoken out about the criticism surrounding Babar Azam. He suggested that the star batter might have benefitted from taking a break during Pakistan’s ongoing tour of South Africa to focus on his mental health.
Speaking on the PTV Sports show Game on Hain, Shoaib Akhtar emphasized the importance of mental well-being in handling the ups and downs of cricket. He explained that stepping back to recover can sometimes help players perform better in the long run.
“Maybe it would have been better for Babar Azam to be rested for the South Africa tour,” Akhtar said. “Keep your mental health intact. Ups and downs happen. People talk, but you flop, you fail, and then you get up and fight.”

Shoaib also urged fans to stop blaming Babar for his recent struggles with the bat. He encouraged the cricketing community to support the Pakistani skipper, who has been under pressure due to inconsistent performances across all formats.
“Stop criticizing Babar so much,” said Shoaib. “Yes, things have gone wrong, but now that he’s in this situation, he has to come out of it.”
The former speedster made it clear that dropping Babar from the team is not the solution. Instead, he expressed confidence in Babar’s ability to overcome this tough phase and reclaim his place as one of the world’s top players.
“You have to prove to the world once again that ‘I’m the best.’ That’s the simple answer,” Shoaib concluded.
