The Hobart Hurricanes endured a nightmare start to their Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 campaign, getting bowled out for just 74 runs in their opening match against the Melbourne Renegades at Docklands Stadium. This disastrous batting performance marked their lowest total ever in BBL history, breaking their previous record of 91 against the Sydney Sixers in 2015.
The Hobart Hurricanes have defied history down in Geelong tonight… but for all the wrong reasons!
Bowled out for 74, they registered their lowest-ever team total by 17 runs — no thanks to a Melbourne Renegades riot!

The Hurricanes’ innings never got going as wickets tumbled from the outset. Matthew Wade was the first to fall in the second over, caught behind off Tom Rogers. Mitchell Owen and Shai Hope attempted to stabilize the innings but failed to build any momentum. Ben McDermott fell for a golden duck, and by the fifth over, the Hurricanes were in deep trouble at 31-4.
Captain Nathan Ellis was the only batter to show some fight, scoring a valiant 35 off 29 balls, including five boundaries and a six. However, his efforts were in vain as the middle and lower order crumbled. Tim David, Chris Jordan, and Riley Meredith all failed to score, leaving the team in shambles. The innings ended in just 12.4 overs, with extras contributing five runs to the total.
Melbourne Renegades Bowlers Dominate
The Melbourne Renegades’ bowling attack was exceptional. Will Sutherland led from the front, taking 3-14 in three overs. Tom Rogers also bagged three wickets, including the crucial dismissals of Wade and McDermott. Fergus O’Neill added to the carnage with 3-16, while Adam Zampa chipped in with one wicket to wrap up the innings.
Hobart Hurricanes’ Record Low
This performance etched a new low in the Hurricanes’ history books. Their 74 all-out surpassed their previous worst of 91 against the Sixers in Sydney back in 2015. The team’s third-lowest total was 98, recorded against the Perth Scorchers in Hobart during the 2020 season.
