Australia’s 19-year-old debutant, Sam Konstas, made a sensational start to his Test career during the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. Konstas, the youngest Australian to open in a Test match, turned heads with his bold and aggressive batting against India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.
Displaying a T20-style approach, Konstas took the fight to Bumrah early in his innings. After missing two ramp shots initially, he successfully executed three in one over, scoring two boundaries and a six.
His fearless batting left commentators Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, and Ravi Shastri stunned. Mark Waugh described the effort as “going all Bazball”.
“I cannot believe this. He has gone all Bazball. He has got a plan against Jasprit Bumrah, but didn’t revealed it. This might be his way of taking down Bumrah” Mark Waugh said on air.
Ravi Shastri praised the youngster for disrupting Bumrah’s rhythm, a rare feat.
“He has done well to unsettle Bumrah and so far it has worked for Konstas.”
The aggressive start from Konstas caught his opening partner Usman Khawaja, the crowd, and even Bumrah himself by surprise. Former Australian captain Mark Taylor had earlier remarked during Konstas’s Baggy Green presentation that his first major challenge would be facing Bumrah, a test the young opener embraced with flair.
Konstas’s innings was as entertaining as it was impactful. He scored a brisk 60 off 65 balls, smashing six fours and two sixes, before being dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. His performance set a fiery tone for the Boxing Day Test and provided a great start for Australia in the 4th test match.
