Australia’s teenage opener, Sam Konstas, delivered a fearless performance on his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. At just 19, Konstas became the youngest Australian to open in a Test and the youngest in over seven decades to score a half-century, reaching the milestone in just 52 balls.
Konstas’s bold approach was on full display as he took on India’s ace pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, early in his innings. Employing daring ramp shots, he struck two boundaries and a six in quick succession against Jasprit Bumrah.

Konstas ended Bumrah’s three-year streak of not conceding a six in Tests with a reverse ramp shot after just 23 balls. His aggressive strokeplay left commentators in awe, with Ricky Ponting speculating that the young batter’s strategy was carefully premeditated.
“I wonder if he sat back last night and said, ‘You know what, boys? I’m going to reverse sweep him all day here” – Ricky Ponting said on air.
The 19-year old scored a brisk 60 off 65 balls, including six fours and two sixes, before being dismissed lbw by Ravindra Jadeja. Konstas’s fearless innings stood in stark contrast to Bumrah’s dominant series performance, unsettling the Indian pacer in a rare show of audacious batting.
Konstas’s fiery debut innings follows his recent explosive performances, including a century against India for the Prime Minister’s XI and a rapid half-century for the Sydney Thunder. His aggression also extended to a verbal exchange with Mohammed Siraj, adding an edge to his partnership with the composed Usman Khawaja.
Despite his dismissal, Konstas’s debut innings has already made waves, showcasing his potential as a future star in Australian cricket and injecting new energy into the ongoing series against India.
