South Africa sealed their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final by defeating Pakistan in the first Test of their two-match series.

With this victory, the Proteas now sit comfortably at the top of the WTC standings with a points percentage (PCT) of 66.67. The race for the second spot in the final is now heating up between Australia and India.

South Africa’s win has also ruled out the possibility of a repeat of the 2023 final between India and Australia. Both teams must now avoid mistakes in their upcoming matches to stay in the race for the Lord’s final.

India and Australia’s Qualification Possibilities

India’s current PCT is 55.88, placing them in third position behind Australia (58.89). Rohit Sharma and his team have only one game left after the Melbourne Test, while Australia still have three matches, including two against Sri Lanka.

Here’s what India and Australia need to do:

  • If India lose the Melbourne Test but draw in Sydney, they will end with 118 points. Australia would surpass this by the end of the series.
  • If India draw both Melbourne and Sydney Tests, they will finish with 122 points and a PCT of 53.50. In this case, Australia must win at least one match against Sri Lanka to secure their place in the final.
Rank Team Points Percentage (PCT)
1 South Africa (Q) 66.67
2 Australia 58.89
3 India 55.88
4 New Zealand 48.21
5 Sri Lanka 45.45
6 England 43.18
7 Bangladesh 31.25

South Africa have already qualified for the WTC final. The competition for the second spot is now between Australia and India. The two head-to-head matches in Melbourne and Sydney are crucial as 228 points are at stake in these contests.
