Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dramatic dismissal on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground has triggered heated debates among fans and experts. Jaiswal’s wicket, which came at a crucial moment in India’s chase, proved pivotal as Australia secured a convincing 184-run victory and a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma addressed the controversy in the post-match press conference, acknowledging the ambiguity around the decision but also suggesting that Jaiswal’s bat did touch the ball.

Rohit Sharma on the Dismissal

In the 71st over of India’s chase, Jaiswal, batting on 84, attempted a hook shot off Pat Cummins. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey claimed the catch, but the on-field umpire ruled it not out. Australia reviewed the decision, and while Snickometer showed no spike, the third umpire judged a deflection from Jaiswal’s gloves and overturned the original decision.

Speaking about the incident, Rohit said:

“Look, I really don’t know what to make of that because the technology didn’t show anything. With the naked eye, it seemed that he did touch something. I don’t know how the umpires want to use the technology, but in all fairness, he did touch the ball.”

He further added, “But again, it’s about the technology, which we all know is not 100 per cent.”

India’s Unfortunate Run with Decisions

Rohit also pointed out that controversial decisions often seem to go against the Indian team. He called his team a bit “unfortunate” when it comes to such incidents.

“Like I said, we don’t want to look too much into that. It’s just that we are, more often than not, falling on the wrong side of it. It has been happening since India. I think we have been a little unfortunate,” Rohit remarked.

Simon Taufel Defends the Third Umpire

Former ICC Elite Panel umpire Simon Taufel weighed in on the controversy, supporting the third umpire Sharfuddoula’s decision. Speaking on 7Cricket, Taufel explained:

“In my view, the decision was out. The third umpire did make the correct decision in the end. With the technology protocols, we do have a hierarchy of redundancy, and when the umpire sees a clear deflection off the bat, there is no need to go any further and use any other form of technology to prove the case.”

He added, “The clear deflection is conclusive evidence. In this particular case, what we have seen from the third umpire is that they’ve used a secondary form of technology, which, for whatever reason, hasn’t shown the same conclusive evidence of audio to back up the clear deflection.”

India’s WTC Final Chances Hinge on Sydney Test

India’s defeat at Melbourne has made their qualification for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final more challenging. Rohit Sharma’s men must win the final Test in Sydney, starting January 3, to keep their hopes alive. Additionally, they will need Sri Lanka to win their upcoming Test series against Australia to improve their chances of qualifying.
