Shaheen Afridi’s first outing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024-25 did not go as planned. Playing for Fortune Barishal, the Pakistan pacer remained wicketless and gave away 33 runs in his four overs. Afridi, who has been in the spotlight recently due to issues with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), failed to deliver the performance his team had hoped for.
Afridi’s debut turned into a tough day as his national teammate Mohammad Haris smashed him for a six, followed by another maximum from Anamul Haque in the same over. Barishal skipper Tamim Iqbal had to take him off the attack after his second over. While Afridi later returned to complete his full quota, he failed to make an impact, leaving the fans and his team disappointed.
Controversy Surrounding Shaheen Afridi
Before joining the BPL, Shaheen Afridi had played in the ODI series against South Africa, where he performed well. However, he was left out of the Test series against the same opposition, with PCB citing workload management as the reason.
Reports suggest that Afridi had refused to play a four-day warm-up match ahead of the South Africa tour, which led to his omission from the Test squad. Unlike his teammate Babar Azam, who also skipped the warm-up match but was still included in the squad, Afridi was not even allowed to travel with the Test team. This has sparked speculation about internal issues between the pacer and the PCB.
While Afridi’s BPL debut was far from ideal, fans will hope the 24-year-old regains his form and delivers strong performances in the tournament.
