Sydney Thunder captain David Warner ended his long wait for a Big Bash League (BBL) half-century with a brilliant knock against Melbourne Renegades on Monday, December 30. Playing at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Warner smashed an unbeaten 86 runs off just 57 balls.

This was Warner’s first BBL fifty since December 2013, when he scored one against Sydney Sixers at the SCG. After that, he stayed away from the tournament for nine years. He returned to play for Thunder in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons under Chris Green’s leadership. Ahead of the current season, after retiring from international cricket, David Warner was named captain of the team.

A Captain’s Knock

Warner reached his fifty in 40 balls and then shifted gears. He added 36 runs in the next 17 balls, hitting 10 fours and two sixes in his innings. His batting helped Sydney Thunder post a competitive score.

In the ongoing season, Warner has been in good form. He has scored 123 runs in three matches at an impressive strike rate of 146.42. Under his leadership, the Thunder have won two out of their three matches so far. A win in this game would move them to second place in the BBL points table, just behind the Sydney Sixers.
