Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s young opener, found himself at the center of a controversial decision during the final session of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday, December 30.
India was chasing 340 runs to win, and while wickets kept falling at the other end, Jaiswal stood strong. The left-hander scored a fighting 84 runs, facing 208 deliveries, before being dismissed by Australian skipper Pat Cummins in the 71st over.
The Decision That Shocked Everyone
Cummins bowled a short ball down the leg side, and Jaiswal attempted a pull shot. The ball took a clear deviation before landing in the gloves of Alex Carey, but on-field umpire Joel Wilson gave it not out.
Confident of the edge, Cummins and Carey immediately went for a review. The third umpire, Sharfuddoula Shahid Saikat, checked the replays and the snickometer. While the replays showed a slight deviation from the bat or gloves, the snickometer displayed no spike. Despite this, the third umpire overturned the on-field decision and gave Jaiswal out.
Jaiswal, visibly upset with the call, had a brief discussion with the on-field umpires before walking back to the pavilion. His innings had given India hope, but his dismissal left the team struggling to save the match.
