Head coach Gautam Gambhir’s role is under the scanner as Team India struggles both on and off the field during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With the must-win fifth Test set to begin on Friday, concerns are mounting about Gambhir’s communication and team management.
Reports suggest that players are unhappy with Gambhir’s approach, especially regarding communication. Unlike former head coaches Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, Gambhir’s communication with the team is said to lack clarity. This has reportedly left players feeling insecure about their roles in the squad.
One of the biggest concerns is the lack of proper explanation about player exclusions. While captain Rohit Sharma has maintained that he speaks to players individually about selection decisions, reports claim that since Gambhir took charge in July, some players have been left unsure about their omission from the playing XI.
Player Insecurity and Squad Management
Gambhir’s handling of players has added to the frustration in the dressing room. Reports indicate that players who fall between the categories of rookies like Harshit Rana and veterans like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli are the ones feeling most insecure. Frequent changes in the playing XI have created uncertainty among them.
Though the inclusion of young players like Nitish Reddy has been seen as a positive move, the treatment of other players, like Shubman Gill, has raised eyebrows. Gill was dropped for the fourth Test in Melbourne, which led to further debates about team management.
Gambhir Under Pressure Ahead of Champions Trophy
Adding to Gambhir’s challenges is his reportedly unclear relationship with the selection committee.
A BCCI official revealed, “If the performance doesn’t improve in the upcoming Test and Champions Trophy, even Gambhir’s position as head coach will be in danger.”
The Indian team now faces huge pressure ahead of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Champions Trophy in February-March.
