The Indian cricket team faces a critical moment ahead of the series-deciding fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Trailing 1-2 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the team might see a major change in leadership, with reports suggesting that Rohit Sharma could be replaced as captain for the final match.
Rohit’s form with the bat has been a concern throughout the series. The 37-year-old has scored less than 10 runs in four of his five innings, raising questions about his place in the playing XI. Adding to the speculation, Rohit Sharma was absent from batting nets and slip cordon drills during practice sessions.
With Rohit Sharma’s participation in doubt, Virat Kohli is expected to return as captain. Kohli has been actively mentoring younger players and leading team discussions.
Rohit’s future in Test cricket also seems uncertain, with reports indicating he may step away from the format after the series. While no immediate retirement announcement is expected, this Test could mark the end of his red-ball career.
Gautam Gambhir Addresses Rumors
Adding to the uncertainty, head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the pre-match press conference instead of Rohit Sharma. This break from tradition further fueled speculation about Rohit’s exclusion.
Gambhir, however, dismissed reports of unrest within the team.
“There were honest conversations, but that’s part of working towards great achievements,” he said. He also confirmed that the playing XI would be announced after assessing the pitch.
The fifth and final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground is a must-win for India to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
