Beau Webster is all set to become Australia’s 469th Test cricketer. He will make his debut in the fifth and final Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday.

Australian captain Pat Cummins confirmed Webster’s inclusion in the playing XI, replacing out-of-form all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

Australia leads the five-match series 2-1 and aims to secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a win or draw in this match. Webster, a versatile all-rounder, will bat at number six and provide a like-for-like replacement for Marsh.

The 31-year-old Webster made his First-Class debut for Tasmania in 2014. Over the years, he has showcased his adaptability, batting in various positions from opener to number seven.

Initially a finger spinner, Webster switched to seam bowling in 2021 to add more depth to his game. Standing tall at 6’5”, he has become a dependable all-rounder for Tasmania.

Webster’s performances in domestic cricket have been impressive. Since the 2022/23 season, he has scored 1,837 runs at an average of 51.01. His red-ball bowling has been equally effective, taking 39 wickets during the same period.

His consistent efforts earned him the Sheffield Shield Player of the Season award.

Career Achievements

In his overall First-Class career, Webster has played 93 matches, scoring 5,297 runs, including 12 centuries, at an average of nearly 38. With the ball, he has taken 148 wickets at an average of 37.39.

Webster also made an impact during the Australia A tour of India in November. In two four-day matches against India A, he scored 145 runs and picked up seven wickets.

With his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, Webster is expected to play a crucial role in the Sydney Test.
