Australian pacer Scott Boland, known for his consistent performances, has etched his name in cricket history. The 35-year-old became the oldest bowler in the last 50 years to claim 50 wickets in Test cricket. Boland reached this milestone during the ongoing fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Sydney.
Scott Boland’s Historic Feat
Boland achieved the landmark at 35 years and 267 days, surpassing New Zealand’s Bevan Congdon, who reached the same mark at 37 years and 10 days in 1975. Boland’s 50th wicket came when he dismissed India’s Nitish Kumar Reddy for a golden duck.
Leading the Australian attack in Sydney, Boland was at his lethal best. He picked up 4 wickets for just 19 runs in 17 overs, putting Australia in a commanding position. His spell started with the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 10, followed by the big wicket of Virat Kohli, who edged to the slips. Boland later removed Rishabh Pant, who was India’s top scorer with 40, before wrapping up his spell with Reddy’s wicket.
Boland has been instrumental in Australia’s success during this series, especially in the absence of injured Josh Hazlewood. In the five innings he has bowled so far, Boland has taken 15 wickets at an average of just 15.46.
His standout performance came in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, where he tore through India’s batting order in the second innings, helping Australia secure a crucial victory.
Career Numbers
Boland’s Test career, though relatively short, has been remarkable. He has taken 50 wickets in just 13 matches at an impressive average of 18.82. Despite being overshadowed by Australia’s frontline pacers like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, Boland’s contributions have been vital for his team.
