Jasprit Bumrah etched his name in the history books by breaking Bishan Singh Bedi’s 46-year-old record for most wickets by an Indian in a Test series in Australia. The record-breaking moment came on Day 2 of the fifth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground when Bumrah dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for his 32nd wicket of the series.
Labuschagne, facing Bumrah’s searing seam-up delivery that kicked off the pitch with late away movement, edged the ball faintly to the keeper. Although the on-field umpire remained unmoved, Bumrah’s confident review revealed the edge on Snicko, handing India a perfect start to the day. Labuschagne’s dismissal, caught behind by Rishabh Pant, ended his brief stay at the crease for just 2 runs off 8 balls.
Bumrah’s feat surpasses the 31 wickets achieved by Bedi during the 1977-78 series against Australia. This milestone is yet another highlight in a remarkable season for Bumrah, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC Test bowling rankings with an unprecedented 907 points, the highest ever for an Indian bowler.
