India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant smashed a quickfire fifty, creating history during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test on Day 2 in Sydney. His explosive knock broke the record for the fastest Test half-century by a visiting batter in Australia.

Pant walked in at No. 5 with India at a shaky 59 for three, holding a narrow four-run lead from the first innings. He took charge immediately, launching into the attack from the very first ball. His innings began with a six off Scott Boland over wide long-on, setting the tone for a blistering innings. Pant raced to his fifty in just 29 balls, breaking several long-standing records.

Breaking 50-Year-Old Records

Pant’s fifty is now the second-fastest in Test cricket in Australia. It is behind only David Warner’s 17-ball half-century against Pakistan in 2017, also in Sydney. Among visiting batters, Pant broke a 50-year-old record held by West Indies’ Roy Fredericks, who scored a 33-ball fifty in Perth in 1975. Before that, England’s John Brown had held the record with a 34-ball fifty in 1895.

This also marks Pant’s second fastest fifty in Tests for India, following his 28-ball half-century against Sri Lanka in 2022.

  • 34 balls – Chris Gayle (WI), 2009 – Perth

Rishabh Pant was eventually dismissed for 61 runs off 33 balls, but his fiery knock has added another milestone to his growing legacy in Test cricket.
