India’s campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 came to a disappointing end on Sunday, January 5, after a six-wicket defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The loss saw India crash out of the WTC 2025 cycle and marked their first BGT series defeat in 10 years, with Australia clinching the series 3-1.
The Indian team’s poor performances under head coach Gautam Gambhir have put his role under scrutiny. Since taking over after the T20 World Cup, Gambhir’s record has been far from ideal. India suffered an ODI series loss in Sri Lanka, were whitewashed at home by New Zealand, and now failed in the BGT. With major tournaments like the Champions Trophy approaching, Gambhir might be replaced soon.
Here are three names who could step in as the next head coach:
1. VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman is one of the strongest contenders for the head coach position. Known for his calm demeanor, Laxman has been a consistent presence in Indian cricket, serving as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and frequently stepping in as a backup coach.
In recent years, he has led the team on multiple occasions, including India’s tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa for T20I series in 2024. Laxman’s strong connection with the players and his understanding of their needs make him a dependable choice for the role. His experience as a batting coach and his ability to handle pressure situations also add to his credentials.
2. Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri’s tenure as head coach from 2017 to 2021 was marked by some of India’s most memorable victories, including historic Test wins in Australia and a dominant run in bilateral series.
Although his time ended with a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, Shastri’s ability to inspire players and his tactical understanding cannot be ignored. With a wealth of experience in coaching across formats, Shastri could be the perfect candidate to bring stability and results to the Indian team once again.
3. WV Raman
Another name in the mix is WV Raman, a highly respected coach in Indian cricket. He has a proven track record in domestic cricket, having guided Tamil Nadu to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title in 2008-09. Additionally, Raman was the batting coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders during their title-winning IPL season in 2014.
Raman also served as the head coach of India’s women’s team from 2018 to 2021, helping them reach the final of the 2020 T20 World Cup. His strategic thinking and experience in handling high-pressure games make him a viable option to take over the reins of the men’s team.
