Shan Masood has made history by becoming the first-ever Pakistan captain to score a Test century in South Africa. During the second Test match against the Proteas at Newlands, Masood slammed his sixth Test century and his first-ever in South Africa, securing a remarkable milestone for both himself and Pakistan cricket.

Pakistan Follows On After First Innings Collapse

Pakistan’s first innings ended in a disappointing fashion, as they were bowled out for just 194 in response to South Africa’s mammoth total of 615. Following this, Pakistan was asked to follow on. However, they responded strongly in their second innings, with Masood and Babar Azam leading the charge.

Shan Masood and Babar Azam put together a magnificent 205-run stand for the opening wicket, the highest-ever opening partnership in Test cricket while following on. Masood reached his century before Babar’s dismissal. Babar, who had been in solid form throughout the series, fell for 81 after a brilliant knock, just 19 runs short of his own century.

Shan Masood’s century was not only a personal achievement but also a historic one for Pakistan. He became the first captain from his country to score a Test century on South African soil. Previously, Saleem Malik had missed out on a century in 1995 when he was dismissed for 99, and Inzamam-ul-Haq was also denied the milestone in 2007 due to a lack of partners.

Highest Scores by Pakistan Captains in South Africa:

  1. Shan Masood – 102* in 2025
  2. Saleem Malik – 99 in 1995
  3. Inzamam-ul-Haq – 92* in 2007
  4. Misbah-ul-Haq – 64 in 2013
  5. Sarfaraz Ahmed – 56 in 2019

Pakistan Fights Back After Follow-On

Despite their first-innings collapse, Pakistan showed great resilience in their follow-on innings. At the end of Day 3, they had reached 213/1, still trailing South Africa by 208 runs. With Shan Masood unbeaten on 102*, the visitors managed to put up a decent fight.

However, Pakistan is already missing Saim Ayub, who was ruled out of the match due to an ankle injury, adding to the challenge of making a strong comeback. The team will need a solid performance in the coming days to remain competitive in the match.
