Sydney Thunder has turned to their assistant coach, Daniel Christian, as a replacement player for the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). The 41-year-old all-rounder, who retired from professional cricket last season, has been called back to the field due to injuries in the Thunder squad.
The team is already missing Tanveer and Jason Sangha due to injuries. A recent collision between Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams further worsened their troubles. Bancroft has been ruled out of the tournament with a broken nose and a fractured shoulder, while Sams will miss a couple of weeks.
Dan Christian Returns to Action
To fill the gaps, the Sydney Thunder brought in Hugh Weibgen, who played a solid knock against Perth Scorchers as a concussion substitute, and Daniel Christian. Christian, who has been part of the Thunder’s coaching staff for two years, expressed his readiness for the challenge.
Christian stated, “I kept playing in the NSW Premier Cricket and stayed fit during the off-season. I always wanted to be prepared in case a chance came my way. Though it’s unfortunate for Bancroft and Sams, I’m thankful for this opportunity.”
This will be Christian’s fifth franchise in the Big Bash League. He has previously represented Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Sixers, where he ended his career in the 2022-23 season.
Sydney Thunder, currently second on the points table, will face Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on Monday, January 6. Despite their challenges, they aim to climb to the top spot in this Road Safety match.
