In a dramatic moment during a recent match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024-25, Mahedi Hasan was given out for obstructing the field, following an incident in the 18.4 over. The decision left many in disbelief and raised questions about the interpretation of the rules. Here’s a breakdown of what happened.

What Exactly Happened?

It all happened in the 19th over when Jahandad Khan was bowling to Mahedi Hasan. Khan delivered a back-of-a-length slower ball angling across the off-stump. Mahedi attempted to work the ball to the leg side but ended up top-edging it. The ball flew towards the bowler, Jahandad Khan, who sprinted in his follow-through to catch it.

However, just as Jahandad Khan was about to take the catch, Nurul Hasan, came into the picture and moved into the path of Khan, potentially obstructing his line of sight and the chance of taking the catch. This action led to a quick referral to the third umpire for review.

The Third Umpire’s Decision

The third umpire reviewed the footage and saw that Nurul had changed his direction, thus interfering with Jahandad Khan’s ability to complete the catch. After examining the replays, the TV umpire upheld the decision and signaled Mahedi Hasan OUT on the big screen for obstructing the field.

Although Mahedi wasn’t happy with the decision and had a brief conversation with the umpires, the ruling remained unchanged. Mahedi had to walk back to the pavilion, and the match continued with the drama still lingering in the air.

The Law Behind the Decision

The decision to give Mahedi out was based on Law 37 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, which states that if a player obstructs a catch, they can be given out, even if the obstruction is caused by a non-striker (in this case, Nurul). This law is clear in its stipulation that any interference with the fielding side’s attempt to take a catch can result in a dismissal, even if the striker is not directly involved in the obstruction.
