Devajit Saikia, a former cricketer from Assam, has taken over as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), replacing Jay Shah. Saikia was elected unopposed during a BCCI Special General Meeting held in Mumbai. This appointment came after the secretary position was vacant for a little over a month. Jay Shah moved on to take up the role of chairman at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Saikia’s first responsibility as BCCI secretary was to attend a meeting alongside BCCI president Roger Binny. The meeting discussed India’s performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
In another important development, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia was elected as BCCI’s new treasurer. He replaces Ashish Shelar, who resigned after being appointed as a cabinet minister in Maharashtra.
Who is Devajit Saikia?
Devajit Saikia has a diverse career that spans cricket, law, and administration. Saikia played four first-class matches between 1990 and 1991 as a wicketkeeper. Though his cricket career was brief, he scored 53 runs and made 9 dismissals.
After retiring from cricket, Saikia turned to law and started practicing at the Gauhati High Court at the age of 28. He had also secured jobs at the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quotas before venturing into law.
Saikia’s journey in cricket administration began in 2016, when he became one of the six vice presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA). Under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is now the Chief Minister of Assam, Saikia made significant contributions. He later became the ACA secretary in 2019, further strengthening his role in the cricketing world.
