Hobart Hurricanes defeated Melbourne Renegades by four wickets in an exciting Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 clash at the Bellerive Oval. The match went down to the final over as the Hurricanes chased a target of 155 with two balls to spare.

Jacob Bethell’s Heroics in Vain

Batting first, Melbourne Renegades posted 154/7 in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant knock from Jacob Bethell. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder smashed 87 runs off just 50 balls, hitting eight boundaries and four sixes. He stood tall despite losing partners at regular intervals, with no other batter crossing 25 runs. Bethell’s innings ended in the final over when he was run out after a mix-up.

Riley Meredith led Hobart Hurricanes’ bowling attack with 3/36, dismissing Josh Brown, Marcus Harris, and Will Sutherland. Nathan Ellis, Mitchell Owen, and Tim David also chipped in with economical spells to restrict the Renegades to a below-par total.

Matthew Wade and Tim David Masterclass

Hobart Hurricanes began their chase cautiously, losing Caleb Jewell early for 1. Mitchell Owen contributed a quick 24 off 14 balls but was run out, leaving the Hurricanes at 36/2 in the fourth over.

Middle-order contributions from Nikhil Chaudhary (36 off 27) and Matthew Wade (36 off 23) steadied the innings. Wade was particularly aggressive, smashing five boundaries and a six before falling to Jacob Bethell. Tim David then took charge, scoring an unbeaten 24 off 15 balls, guiding the Hurricanes home alongside Nathan Ellis.

The Hurricanes sealed the win in the 20th over, finishing at 155/6. For the Renegades, Jacob Bethell was the pick of the bowlers with 2/29, while Tom Rogers and Callum Stow claimed one wicket each.
