Jacob Bethell, who was purchased by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for INR 2.6 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, displayed his immense talent in Match 34 of the Big Bash League 2024-25.
Playing for Melbourne Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval, Bethell scored a stunning 87 runs off 50 balls. His innings included 8 boundaries and 4 sixes, helping the Renegades post a total of 154/7 in their 20 overs.
The Renegades had a shaky start, losing Josh Brown and Marcus Harris early. Jake Fraser-McGurk also departed cheaply, leaving the team struggling at 23/3 within the first five overs.
Bethell then stepped up and took control of the innings. He batted with confidence, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Although Bethell found some support from Tim Seifert, who scored 24 runs from 23 balls, the rest of the batting lineup failed to capitalize.
Will Sutherland managed 15 runs, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Bethell held one end firmly but was run out on the first ball of the final over while trying to accelerate the scoring.
Riley Meredith was the standout bowler for the Hobart Hurricanes, taking 3 wickets for 36 runs in his four overs. Mitchell Owen and Nathan Ellis also bowled well, picking up one wicket each and keeping the Renegades under pressure throughout the innings.
Bethell’s outstanding innings, however, showcased his potential and why RCB invested in him for the upcoming IPL season.
