The Gabba witnessed a Big Bash League (BBL) classic as Hobart Hurricanes edged past Brisbane Heat in a nail-biting, last-ball thriller. Matthew Wade, showcasing immense composure, sealed the deal in Dhoni-esque fashion with a massive six off the final delivery, leading his team to a five-wicket victory.

Put into bat, Brisbane Heat came out all guns blazing, posting a mammoth 201/6 in their 20 overs. Captain Usman Khawaja gave a flying start with a quickfire 23 off 9 balls before falling to Nathan Ellis.

However, it was Marnus Labuschagne who stole the show with a scintillating 77 off 44 balls on his BBL return. Labuschagne anchored the innings with precision, finding boundaries with ease and punishing the Hurricanes’ bowlers.

Matthew Renshaw chipped in with an entertaining 40 off 25 balls, while Tom Alsop contributed a handy 39 off 27 balls, utilizing the Power Surge effectively.

Nathan Ellis was the standout bowler for the Hurricanes, finishing with impressive figures of 3/42, including the key wickets of Alsop and Labuschagne in the final over.

Hobart Hurricanes’ Record-Breaking Chase

Chasing 202, the Hurricanes got off to a dream start thanks to Caleb Jewell (76 off 49) and Mitchell Owen (44 off 20). The duo put up a blistering 80-run partnership in just 6.5 overs, setting the tone for the chase. Jewell played with finesse, smashing nine boundaries and a six, while Owen added fireworks with his six-hitting spree.

However, Brisbane Heat clawed their way back into the contest. Spencer Johnson (3/26) delivered a brilliant spell, dismissing Jewell, Owen, and Tim David to give his team a fighting chance. Nikhil Chaudhary played a steady hand with 39 off 27, keeping the Hurricanes afloat until the Power Surge, where both he and Jewell fell in quick succession.

Matthew Wade’s Final-Over Heroics

With 11 needed off the final over, Xavier Bartlett bowled well initially, leaving the Hurricanes needing one off the last ball. Bartlett then opted for pace, missing his yorker, and delivered a low full toss. Matthew Wade capitalized on the error, getting under the ball and launching it over square leg for a thunderous six, sealing the game in dramatic fashion.
