In a surprising move, India has dropped fast bowler Mohammed Siraj from the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The decision comes as a result of the return of seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami, who has been added to the squad, bringing valuable experience to the team.
Shami’s Experience Over Siraj’s Form
While Mohammed Siraj has been impressive in recent matches, his performance with the new ball has not been as effective as expected. Siraj’s ability to swing the new ball has been inconsistent, and he has not been a major force at the death overs.
In contrast, Mohammed Shami has been outstanding with both the new ball and in the crucial final overs. Shami’s vast experience in international cricket, especially in big tournaments like the Champions Trophy, has earned him a spot in the squad.
Here’s what Rohit Sharma has said in the press-conference:
“Mohammad Siraj is not effective and his effectiveness come down when the ball gets older.”
Sanju Samson Also Misses Out
Along with Siraj, wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has also failed to make the cut for the Champions Trophy squad. India has opted to go with only two wicketkeeping options in the form of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. This decision leaves Samson out of the mix, despite his recent good performances.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness Still Uncertain
Rohit Sharma, during a press conference, also confirmed that they are still unsure about Jasprit Bumrah’s full fitness ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. Bumrah is currently part of the squad, but his inclusion in the playing XI will depend on his recovery. If Bumrah regains full fitness, he is expected to play a crucial role in India’s campaign.
India Champions Trophy Squad 2025:
Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.
