The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season will feature several big Indian cricketers aiming to find their form and help their state teams. Moreover, after India’s recent struggles in Test cricket, including a 3-0 series loss to New Zealand and a 3-1 defeat in Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has encouraged players to participate in domestic matches to improve their game.
Let’s look at the players who will take part in the Ranji Trophy this season:
Rohit Sharma
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, will play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy after a nine-year gap. His last match in the tournament was in 2015. Known for facing problems against swinging balls, Rohit will use this opportunity to prepare for India’s upcoming Test series in England.
Apart from improving his batting, Rohit’s presence as an experienced leader will help the Mumbai team in their Group A matches.
Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant is slowly returning to cricket after recovering from a serious accident. The wicketkeeper-batter will play for Delhi in their match against Saurashtra. Pant is known for his attacking style, and his return will strengthen Delhi’s middle order.
Interestingly, Pant declined the captaincy, allowing Ayush Badoni to continue as the team’s leader. He chose to focus only on batting and wicketkeeping as he makes his comeback to domestic cricket.
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja, the star all-rounder, will represent Saurashtra in their match against Delhi. Even though there were talks about his possible retirement after Ravichandran Ashwin stepped away from Test cricket, Jadeja is eager to continue playing in the longer format.
His inclusion will boost Saurashtra’s chances in the tournament and help him stay ready for upcoming international matches.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Young batting star Yashasvi Jaiswal will play for Mumbai in their match against Jammu and Kashmir. Jaiswal was India’s top scorer in the recent Test series against Australia, making 391 runs, including a century.
Jaiswal’s decision to participate in the Ranji Trophy shows his dedication to improving his consistency. His performance will also be important as he prepares for the ICC Champions Trophy later this year.
Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj will play for Hyderabad in their last group match against Vidarbha. He is skipping the earlier match against Himachal Pradesh to manage his workload but will return for the final game.
Siraj is not part of the India squad for the Champions Trophy or the ODI series against England. The selectors rather preferred Arshdeep Singh for his old-ball skills in the pace attack.
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill will play for Punjab in their match against Karnataka. After a tough Test series in Australia, where he scored only 93 runs in five innings, Gill will try to regain his form through the Ranji Trophy.
This domestic season gives him a chance to get back in form and push for a spot in the Indian squad for the Test series in England, starting in June.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul had initially planned to play the Ranji Trophy for Delhi and Karnataka, but they had to opt out due to injuries.
