Rishabh Pant has been named the new captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the IPL 2025 season, the franchise announced on Monday. The new season is set to begin on March 21. Pant takes over from KL Rahul, who was released by the team ahead of the IPL 2024 mega auction.
LSG signed Pant for a record ₹27 crore at the mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This makes him the most expensive player in IPL auction history. The team’s owner, Sanjeev Goenka, revealed the decision during an exclusive chat with Star Sports, saying:
“We decided on Pant as the captain the moment we won him in the auction but waited for the right time to announce it.”
A New Chapter for Rishabh Pant
Pant is taking on his second IPL captaincy role, having previously led Delhi Capitals (DC). During his tenure with DC, he captained 43 matches, winning 23 of them with a win percentage of 54.65. His leadership took DC to the top of the league stage in 2021, though they couldn’t reach the final. In 2022 and 2024, DC had disappointing campaigns, and Pant eventually left the franchise after their efforts to retain him failed.
With LSG looking for a strong leader after KL Rahul’s departure, Pant was the perfect fit. Rahul had captained LSG for three seasons (2022-2024), guiding them to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. However, the 2024 season was a setback, with the team finishing seventh on the points table.
Pant will now lead an LSG team that has retained key players like Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni, and Mayank Yadav. He will work closely with head coach Justin Langer and newly appointed mentor Zaheer Khan.
