The first Qualifier of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 saw Hobart Hurricanes post a competitive total of 173/7 against Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval, Hobart. After being asked to bat first, the Hurricanes put on an exciting batting display, with crucial contributions from Mitchell Owen and Tim David.
Strong Start by Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell
Mitchell Owen gave the Hurricanes a flying start. He attacked the new-ball bowlers, smashing 36 off just 15 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Caleb Jewell supported him well, playing a steady knock at the other end. The duo helped the Hurricanes score 47 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket.
However, the Sixers struck back immediately after the powerplay. Jafer Chohan dismissed Owen, breaking the 47-run opening stand. Soon after, Matthew Wade fell cheaply for four, courtesy of a stunning catch by Jack Edwards.
Middle Order and Late Surge
Ben McDermott and Jewell steadied the innings but found it hard to score freely as the Sixers bowled tight lines. Jewell scored 40 off 41 balls, while McDermott made a solid 42 off 31.
The Hurricanes took the Power Surge in the 15th over, and Tim David made an immediate impact. He smashed 25 off just 10 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes. McDermott also found some rhythm during this phase, helping the team accelerate.
However, the Hurricanes couldn’t finish strongly as wickets fell in quick succession. Tim David’s dismissal in the 19th over slowed the momentum, and the team ended at 173/7.
Jafer Chohan and Ben Dwarshuis were the pick of the bowlers for the Sixers, taking two wickets each. Mitchell Perry and Jack Edwards grabbed one wicket apiece but conceded runs at a higher rate.
The pitch at Bellerive Oval looks good for batting, and defending 173 won’t be easy with the short boundaries. The Hurricanes will need to bowl smartly to stop the Sixers, who have a weakened batting line-up.
