The Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 Qualifier match between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers witnessed a tense moment that could have ended in disaster. The incident occurred in the second over when Moises Henriques and Kurtis Patterson were batting for the Sixers.

On the fifth ball of the over, Cameron Gannon bowled a back-of-a-length delivery around off-stump to Henriques. The Sixers’ skipper tapped the ball towards extra cover and initially called for a quick single. Patterson, trusting his captain, also took off for the run. However, as Tim David charged toward the ball with sharp reflexes, Henriques quickly sent Patterson back.

David attempted a direct hit at the stumps but missed narrowly. Patterson, meanwhile, had to dive full stretch to make it back to the crease. The replays showed that Patterson might have just been safe even if the throw had hit the stumps.

Close Call for the Umpire

The real scare, however, came as the ball continued its trajectory after missing the stumps. It flew past the diving Patterson and came dangerously close to the standing umpire. A few inches closer, and the ball could have hit his head, potentially causing serious injury. Fortunately, the umpire reacted swiftly and avoided what could have been a dangerous accident on the field.
