England faced a tough defeat in the first T20I against India at Eden Gardens, losing by seven wickets. The visitors struggled in all departments, particularly with their batting, as they were bowled out for just 132 runs. Harry Brook, who scored 17 runs and was England’s second-highest scorer in the match, shared his thoughts on the performance and the challenges faced during the game.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the second T20I in Chennai, Brook admitted that spin bowling posed difficulties for England. However, he also pointed to the “smog” in Kolkata, saying it affected their ability to bat effectively. “The smog the other night made it harder to pick the ball. Hopefully, the air is clearer here in Chennai,” Brook remarked.
India’s spinners, including Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Axar Patel, took full advantage of the turning conditions at Eden Gardens. They collectively bowled 12 overs, taking five wickets and conceding just 67 runs. Brook, who was bowled by Chakaravarthy, praised the Indian spinner as “exceptionally good” but acknowledged that his own struggles against spin remain an area of improvement.
Brook also reflected on his approach to tackling spin in T20s, stating, “Facing spin in T20 cricket is one of the hardest challenges. I try to play aggressively, but maybe I need to be more cautious at times.” He added that while he has a method against spin, he needs to execute it more consistently.
Despite the setback, Brook expressed confidence in England’s ability to bounce back, citing head coach Brendon McCullum’s advice to stay positive and keep applying pressure on the opposition.
The second T20I between India and England will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, January 25. England will look to level the series as they continue to work on their game plan against spin and adapt to the conditions.
