In a thrilling final at Bellerive Oval, the Hobart Hurricanes triumphed over Sydney Thunder by seven wickets to clinch their maiden Big Bash League (BBL) title. The match was a one-sided affair, with the Hurricanes dominating both with the ball and bat.
Sydney Thunder posted a total of 182/7 in their 20 overs. Jason Sangha top-scored with a well-crafted 67 off 42 balls, while captain David Warner contributed 48 from 32 balls.
Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith were the chief architects of the Hurricanes’ attack, taking three wickets each, with Ellis dismissing Sangha, Warner, and Gilkes, and Meredith cleaning up the lower order.
Despite a late cameo by Chris Green (16 from 9), Thunder’s innings never gained momentum, leaving them with a total that appeared insufficient for a final.
Mitchell Owen’s Explosive Knock Steals the Show
The Hurricanes’ chase was nothing short of sensational, with Mitchell Owen leading the charge. Owen’s blistering 108 off just 42 balls, including six fours and eleven sixes, took the game away from the Thunder in no time. His strike rate of 257.14 was a display of power hitting as he tore apart the Thunder bowlers, making the chase look effortless.
Alongside him, Matthew Wade played a fine knock of 32 from 17 balls, ensuring there were no further hiccups. The Hurricanes reached their target of 183 in just 14.1 overs, winning with seven wickets to spare.
Owen’s match-winning innings was supported by a handy cameo from Ben McDermott (18 off 12), as the Hurricanes stormed to victory. Tom Andrews picked up the only wicket for the Thunder, dismissing Owen, but it was all too late by then.
This victory marks the first-ever BBL title for the Hobart Hurricanes in the 14-year history of the competition, and they certainly made their maiden win memorable with an unforgettable performance in the final.
