Mitchell Owen has made history in the Big Bash League with an unforgettable performance, blasting a century off just 39 balls in the final against Sydney Thunder. The 23-year-old’s scorching innings led the Hobart Hurricanes to an easy victory in the BBL 14 finale, as they chased down a target of 183 with ease.

Owen’s breathtaking knock of 108 from 42 balls brought him level with Craig Simmons, who set the record for the fastest century in BBL history in 2014. Simmons had scored his century off 39 balls for the Perth Scorchers against the Adelaide Strikers, and Owen matched that feat in grand style. His strike rate of 263.41 is now the highest for any BBL player in history, adding a remarkable chapter to the tournament’s history books.

From the very start, Owen’s destructive batting left Sydney Thunder’s bowlers scrambling for answers. He launched an all-out assault, smashing 31 runs off Nathan McAndrew’s two overs and 22 off Wes Agar’s lone spell. Despite losing partners like Caleb Jewell (13 from 12 balls) and Nikhil Chaudhary (1), Owen continued his rampage, reaching his century in just the 10th over. With 11 sixes, many of which sailed into the stands, Owen showed his dominance, leading the Hurricanes to a total of 185/3 in just 14.1 overs.

His performance left the Thunder reeling and ultimately helpless, as they couldn’t find a way to stop Owen’s onslaught. Owen’s record-breaking century has not only secured the Hurricanes their first-ever BBL title but also put him in the elite company of the fastest century scorers in BBL history.
