The Hobart Hurricanes began their chase of 183 with a bang, thanks to a breathtaking display of power-hitting by 23-year-old Mitchell Owen. With no regard for Sydney Thunder’s bowlers, Owen set the stage ablaze, bulldozing through the powerplay to give his team a commanding start in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024/25 final at Bellerive Oval.
The highlight of his blistering innings came in the third over, bowled by Wes Agar. Owen unleashed a flurry of boundaries, scoring 22 runs off the over, including three massive sixes and a cracking four.
The over began with Owen launching Agar’s delivery over backward square leg for a towering six, a shot that immediately sent the crowd into a frenzy. On the next ball, he backed away and attempted another boundary but mistimed his shot, resulting in a rare dot ball. Agar might have thought he had a chance, but Owen quickly dashed those hopes.
The third ball saw Owen charging down the pitch to a slower delivery, smashing it high and straight over long-on for another maximum. As the pressure mounted on Agar, Owen whipped the next delivery over square leg with ease, sending it sailing into the stands for his third six of the over.
Not done yet, Owen backed away on the fifth ball and slapped it over extra cover for a boundary. Agar finally managed to escape further punishment on the last ball as Owen swung hard but missed, ending the over with a dot. However, by the time the over concluded, Owen’s carnage had left a lasting impact on the Thunder’s bowling attack.
Owen’s extraordinary knock didn’t stop there. His 16-ball fifty became the third-fastest half-century in BBL history, and fastest for Hobart Hurricanes. By the fourth over, Hobart Hurricanes had raced to 74 without losing a wicket, with Owen leading the charge in what looked like a title-clinching performance.
