Jasprit Bumrah has created history by becoming the first Indian fast bowler to win the prestigious ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year award. He was honored with the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for his outstanding performances in 2024.

Bumrah joins the elite list of Indian players to win this award, including Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018). He outshined nominees like Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook to claim the title.

A Remarkable Year for Bumrah

Bumrah’s performances in 2024 were exceptional, making him the standout player across formats. He was instrumental in India’s Test series victories at home against England and Bangladesh. His biggest achievement came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where he took 32 wickets and was named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year.

In total, Bumrah picked up 71 wickets in 13 Test matches in 2024, the most by any bowler that year. He also played a vital role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph, taking 15 wickets at an average of 8.26. His all-round efforts helped India defeat South Africa in the final, and he was named the Player of the Tournament.

Bumrah expressed his happiness after receiving the award and said that winning the T20 World Cup was a special moment in his career.

“I am really happy to be winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Men’s Cricketer of the Year award. Last year was memorable, especially winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados. It will always be close to my heart.

When I was a youngster, I saw many of my heroes winning this ICC award. I am very happy to be on the receiving end,” said Bumrah.

Currently, Bumrah is recovering from a back niggle sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He aims to return in time for the Champions Trophy in February, where he will be a key player for India once again.
