Varun Chakravarthy had a standout performance in the third T20 match against England on January 28. After making his return to the Indian team, he picked up his second 5-wicket haul in T20Is, becoming the third Indian bowler to achieve this feat. Varun joined the ranks of Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had previously managed to take multiple five-wicket hauls in T20 internationals.

Varun’s excellent bowling performance helped India dominate the match and put England on the back foot. He dismissed five England players: Jos Buttler, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, and Jofra Archer. His efforts were key in limiting England’s progress during the match. Varun’s first 5-wicket haul came during India’s tour of South Africa, and since then, he has been in top form, picking up 3 wickets in the first match of the series and 2 wickets in the second.

Varun’s spell began during the end of the powerplay when England’s Ben Duckett was attacking him. The mystery spinner managed to contain Duckett and dismissed Jos Buttler with a brilliant delivery. Though it looked like Buttler had survived, Sanju Samson’s sharp call for a review led to the breakthrough. From that point, the wickets started falling regularly for England.

After dismissing Buttler, Varun turned the match in India’s favor. He got his revenge on Jamie Smith, who had hit him for a six earlier. Varun quickly followed up with another wicket by cleaning up Jamie Overton off the very next ball, nearly completing a hat-trick. He then took two more wickets in his final over, first removing Brydon Carse, who was caught in the deep, and then bamboozling Jofra Archer to complete his 5-wicket haul. Varun ended his spell with remarkable figures of 5 for 24 in 4 overs.
