Team India spinner Varun Chakravarthy delivered a stunning performance in the third T20I against England on January 28 in Rajkot. The mystery spinner took two wickets off consecutive deliveries, dismissing Jamie Overton and Jamie Smith, and narrowly missed a hat-trick. He ended the game with impressive figures of 5/24 in his four overs.
Chakravarthy started his spell in the final over of the powerplay. He kept things tight, giving away just one run in his first six balls. His first wicket came soon after, dismissing England captain Jos Buttler with the help of a sharp review by Sanju Samson, who showed quick reflexes behind the stumps.
In the 14th over, Varun returned to take control of the game. Jamie Smith hit him for a six but fell on the very next delivery, caught by Dhruv Jurel at deep midwicket. Jamie Overton replaced Jamie Smith but was clean-bowled on the very first ball, giving Varun two wickets in two deliveries. Brydon Carse, who faced the hat-trick ball, managed to survive, but Varun had already done enough damage in that over, conceding just eight runs and taking two wickets.
Chakravarthy continued his magic in the 16th over, picking up two more wickets to complete his five-wicket haul. His brilliant spell restricted England to 171/9 in their 20 overs. Liam Livingstone was the only batter to put up a fight for the visitors, scoring 43 runs off 24 balls.
England now faces a must-win situation to keep the five-match series alive after losing the first two games.
