Mumbai Indians have added another team to their global cricket portfolio. The franchise, owned by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has secured a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles, a team in The Hundred tournament. According to Cricbuzz, Mumbai Indians won the bid with an offer of £123 million, which was much higher than expected.
A Major Move in English Cricket
Oval Invincibles, managed by Surrey County Cricket Club, was one of the first teams up for sale in the bidding process. Mumbai Indians outbid several competitors, including tech giants from Google and Microsoft, as well as private equity firm CVC Capital Partners.
The Invincibles have been one of the most successful teams in The Hundred, winning both the 2023 and 2024 editions. With this purchase, Mumbai Indians have strengthened their influence in international franchise cricket.
Deal Valuation and Future Plans
Sources suggest that Oval Invincibles’ total valuation is around £125 million. If this price is confirmed, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to receive around £60 million from the deal. This sale also sets a benchmark for the remaining seven teams, which will be sold in the coming weeks.
Mumbai Indians will now work with Surrey, the ECB, and financial advisors to finalize the deal. Reports indicate that MI will have a strong role in managing the cricketing aspects of the team.
The auction for London Spirit, the most valuable team in The Hundred, will take place next. The ECB is expected to finalize that sale on Friday. Following that, Birmingham Phoenix will be the next team on the block, with its bidding scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
