In the ongoing 1st Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Galle, Usman Khawaja made history by becoming the first Australian batter to score a double century in Test cricket in Sri Lanka. The 38-year-old left-hander reached this milestone on Day 2 of the Test, during the morning session.
Khawaja achieved his double century with a single on the first ball of the 111th over in Australia’s first innings. The ball was bowled by Prabath Jayasuriya, and Khawaja tapped it to the right of the mid-off fielder. Jayasuriya misjudged the situation, and the ball rolled harmlessly to mid-off, allowing Khawaja to complete the single. He reached 200 runs off 290 balls, including 16 fours and one six. This century brought Khawaja’s total to 16 Test centuries.
Usman Khawaja Breaks Australian Record in Sri Lanka
Usman Khawaja now holds the record for the highest individual score by an Australian in Test cricket in Sri Lanka, with an unbeaten 200*. He surpassed previous record-holders, including Justin Langer (166) and Damien Martyn (161).
In the same match, Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith also reached a big milestone. He became the 15th player in Test cricket history to score over 10,000 runs. Smith went on to score 141 runs, including his 35th Test century, before being dismissed by Sri Lanka’s leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.
