Mitchell Owen, the young Australian all-rounder, made his debut for Paarl Royals against Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Saturday, February 1. Owen replaced Joe Root in the squad for the play-offs. However, his debut with the ball did not go as planned, especially in the final over of the first innings.
Tristan Stubbs, known for his aggressive batting, took full advantage of Owen’s bowling. In the 20th over, Stubbs hammered Owen for three back-to-back sixes and a boundary, collecting 22 runs from those four shots alone. Owen ended up conceding 23 runs in the over, making his overall performance quite forgettable. Despite the poor final over, Owen picked up two wickets in his three-over spell, giving away a total of 37 runs.
This match marked Owen’s first appearance in the competition after his brilliant performance in the Big Bash League 2024/25, where he made headlines with a match-winning century for Hobart Hurricanes in the final. He will hope to perform better with the bat in the second innings of this game.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape batted first and scored 148/8 in their 20 overs. The innings had some strong contributions, especially from Jordan Hermann, who top-scored with 53 runs off 38 balls, including 6 fours and 1 six. Tristan Stubbs also made a valuable contribution, scoring 43 runs from 27 balls with 1 four and 3 sixes.
Other than these two, only a few batters managed to get into double digits. David Bedingham and Tom Abell both fell cheaply, and Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen couldn’t do much either.
For Paarl Royals, Mitchell Owen took two wickets, but his economy rate of 12.00 and the expensive final over were not ideal. Eshan Malinga also stood out with the ball, picking up two wickets for 21 runs from his four overs.
