Punjab Kings (PBKS) is one of the IPL teams still searching for its first-ever trophy. Over the years, they have changed their squad and coaching staff frequently. Many former team members have spoken about the team’s environment and how the management treats them.

Recently, PBKS appointed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. He joined after his time with Delhi Capitals (DC) ended following IPL 2024. Ponting was also present at the auction table during the IPL 2025 mega auction and played a big role in selecting players.

Ricky Ponting’s Clear Stand

Punjab Kings has been known for being controlled by its owners and management in decision-making. However, Ricky Ponting has now made it clear that he will be in full charge of the team. He has stated that PBKS will follow his methods and strategies, not just the owners’ decisions.

“We’ve had the necessary discussions, and I’m pleased with how the auction went. But moving forward, even though they are the owners, this is my team now. They need to understand that this is the new approach, and we’re doing things completely differently from how it’s been done in the past.”

“The owners, the administrators, and the board are fully aware of how I plan to approach things. I made it clear from the start. Having been in the IPL for 10 years, I’ve heard a lot about how things have been perceived at this franchise, and I told them—if they want it to be different, they need to make it different.”

A New Era for PBKS?

Ponting has promised major changes in how PBKS will train, play, and present itself. He believes that leadership, playing style, and auction strategy will all be different under him.

“Things are going to be very different—how we’re perceived, how people see us, how we present ourselves, our training methods, our style of play, and the leadership. Everything is going to change. When it comes to the auction strategy, if I’m going to rebuild this franchise and make it the most successful it’s ever been, I have to start with the right Indian players.”

With Ponting taking full control, Punjab Kings fans will hope for a turnaround in the upcoming season.
