Shreyas Iyer was one of the stars in India’s victory against England in the first ODI, scoring 59 runs off 36 balls. However, after the match, he shared an interesting story about how he ended up playing. Iyer revealed that he wasn’t even supposed to be in the playing XI for the match in Nagpur.

Virat Kohli’s Injury Opens the Door

Iyer said that he only got the chance to play because Virat Kohli was injured. Kohli had a sore right knee, which kept him out of the first ODI. Iyer was ready for any chance that might come his way. He mentioned that last year during the Asia Cup, he had to sit out due to an injury, and someone else got the chance to play and score a century.

“I wasn’t supposed to play today,” Iyer said. “But when I heard about Virat’s injury, I was called up to play. I kept myself ready, knowing that I could get a chance at any time.”

Iyer also shared that he was relaxing and watching a movie the night before the match. He thought he could enjoy the rest of his evening, but then he received a call. The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, informed him about Kohli’s injury and said that he might play in the match. Iyer quickly returned to his room and went to sleep, preparing for the big game.

India will next face England in the second ODI in Cuttack.
